James Thornton Rupert, for over ten years janitor in the Altoona High school building, died at 7.35 o'clock yesterday morning at his home, 1415 Eleventh street, after a short illness of pneumonia. He was taken ill in the high school on Wednesday. He was born on April 19, 1846, in York county, and came to Altoona in 1870, working for many years as a painter in the Pennsy shops. He later worked for the painters about the city and ten years ago secured a position as janitor in the school district. He was well known by many students and former students of the school and was popular with the student body, with whom he came in contact. He was married in Altoona to Miss Tillie Lewis, in February, 1875. He is survived by his widow, two children, Mrs. Daisy Johnson of Wilkinsburg and Charles W. of this city and one brother, John Rupert of Mechanicsburg. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, of the Odd Fellows lodge and of White Cross lodge, Knights of Pythians [sic]. The funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock with interment in Rose Hill cemetery. Altoona Times, Altoona, Pa., Friday Morning, October 25, 1918
