RUSH Died of dropsy at the county almshouse, shortly after 6 o'clock this morning. The deceased was born in Ferguson Valley, Mifflin county, about 55 years ago. He received a common school education and for a time taught school in his native county. Later he studied medicine with a physician in Ferguson Valley, and after taking a course of lectures, graduated from Jefferson college in Philadelphia. When the war began he enlisted as a surgeon and served for three years. At the time of his death he was drawing a pension of $12 per month. After the war he practiced his profession in Frankstown and Hollidaysburg and at Mapleton, Mifflin county, and would have been successful had he not unfortunately been addicted to the use of opium and liquor. He married about twenty-five years ago, but his domestic life was an unhappy one, and for many years he had been separated from his wife, who, with his little daughter, Bertha, is believed to be in Indiana county. He is also survived by a son, Hays, aged 19. The doctor was a well known figure in this city and vicinity. He was a fine musician and penman and at one time was prosperous financially. He came from a good family and is survived by one sister, Mrs. Belle Harshberger of Mattawanna, Mifflin county, and the following brothers: Matthew M. of this city, Oliver of Bellwood, Albert, a dentist of McVeytown, and George of Lewistown. The remains will be removed to the home of Matthew Rush, 507 Seventh avenue, this city. The G.A.R. has been communicated with, and it is likely that the body will be interred in the plot about the monument in Fairview cemetery. Altoona Mirror, May 21, 1896
