He was born in Sharpsburg on Aug. 16, 1856, a son of Jacob and Gertrude (Heller) Schirf, who resided for many years in Cambria county. His wife, Mrs. Theresa (S-oltz) Schirf, died on Jan. 20 of this year. Surviving are five sons and two daughters, Dennis A. Schirf of the city, Thomas J. of Anadorka, Okla., Frank A. Schirf and Mrs. Nicholas F. Shank of the city, Nicholas Schirf of Antis township, Mrs. E. J. Strohmeyer of Niles, O., and Edward E. Schirf of the city. Two brothers and one sister, Giles Schirf of Latrobe, John of Nicktown and Mrs. Savina Lulay of Oregon, also survive. Mr. Schirf was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church. The body may be viewed at the home. The funeral will be held Thursday morning with requiem mass at 9 o'clock in St. Mary's church. Interment will be made in St. Mary's cemetery.
