MERLE C. SCHMIDT 

  Merle C. Schmidt, age 79, of Birmingham Boro, Tyrone, died Wednesday, 
April 9, 2003 at his home.
  He was born February 25, 1924 in Tyrone, the son of Herbert J. and 
Mary Gertrude Piper Schmidt. 
  On March 31, 1946, he was married to Elizabeth Lucille Buck who 
preceded him in death August 9, 2001.
  He is survived by a son, John C. and wife Diana Schmidt of 
Thomastown, a grandson, Casey Ross Schmidt, two brothers Ross of 
Bellwood and James of Tyrone and two sisters, Ethel Garland and Pearl 
Wilson, both of Tyrone.
  He was preceded in death by three sisters, Hazel, Marie and Bessie.
  He was a member of the Birmingham Presbyterian Church, was a graduate 
of the Tyrone High School and served in the United States Marine Corps 
in World War II from December 1942 to December 1945 with service in the 
South Pacific.
  He had been employed as an auto mechanic at Rupert and Harpster 
Chevrolet and retired from Penn State University in 1986 as an auto 
mechanic after 20 years of service.
  There will be no public visitation. A memorial service will be held 
at a time to be announced.
  Arrangements are under the direction of the Richard H. Searer Funeral 
Home.
