Death at the Family Residence in Pleasant Valley. At ten minutes after 11 o'clock last night John Schmitt, sr., died at his home in Pleasant Valley, at the foot of Eighth street, aged 62 years. The cause of death was intestinal obstruction. Mr. Schmitt had not been in good health for --?-- years, but only last Saturday was in this city and it was on his return home that he was seized by the illness which resulted in his death. The deceased was born in 1838 in Elm, Germany, and landed in this county August 23, 1866. For seven years he made the city of Baltimore his home, there learning the trade of a butcher. Ten years later he came to Altoona, entered the employ of the railroad company, and resigned afterward to open a meat market at Fifth avenue and Thirtieth street. He conducted this until --?--, when he retired to the home which he had built in Pleasant Valley. On June 16, 1867, he was married to --?-- Eva M. Schmitt, who, with three children, survives. These latter are John Schmitt, jr., engineer of No. 1 fire company, residing at 1308 Eleventh avenue, Fred W. and Miss Minnie, at home. --?-- brothers and one sister reside in Germany, and another sister, Mrs. Andrew Heinsbaugh, lives in McConnellsburg, Fulton county. Mr. Schmitt was a member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran church, and was chairman of the original building committee. He was a quiet unobtrusive citizen and a good husband and father. The time of the funeral will be announced later. The interment, however, will be made in the family plot in Greenwood cemetery. Morning Tribune, Wednesday, January 17, 1900 LOCAL BREVITIES. The funeral of John Schmitt, sr., will take place Saturday morning and will be private. The services will be conducted at the family residence, Eighth street and Pleasant Valley road, at 9:30 o'clock by Rev. Lewis Robb. Interment in Greenwood cemetery.
