On Friday morning Mr. John Schwartz, of the firm of Stonerod & Schwartz, contractors, and his son, William E., were busy putting down a tight floor in the second story of a new barn, the firm had contracted to build for Mr. S. T. Knox, of Broad and Twenty-fifth streets. Shortly before 12 o'clock the youth had placed a board over the rafters and was preparing to make a cut. In the board was a knot and it broke at that portion, precipitating the young man to the ground floor, headforemost. His father was working only about two feet away from him, and when he saw his son was falling tried to catch him but failed. When he fell his head struck the hard plank floor and he was rendered unconscious. His father hastened to his relief but all his efforts to restore animation was unsuccessful, and he was brought to his home at 907 Eighth avenue, this city. A physician was summoned who expressed his conviction that concussion of the brain had resulted from the fall. Later in the day internal hemorrhages were observed. The injured lad regained the use of his facilities on Saturday and retained it throughout the day, but hemorrhage after hemorrhage occurred and he grew weaker and at 8.30 o'clock died. The deceased was born in Bedford county and at the time of his death he was 16 years and 2 days old. He leaves to mourn their loss his father, mother and one sister, May Elizabeth. The family have lived in this city about one year. The bereaved will have the sympathy of the entire community in their great affliction. He was the only son and was liked by all who knew him. He was an attendant of Christ Reformed church. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 3 o'clock. Services will be conducted at the late residence by Rev. D. S. Deiffenbacher, of the Reformed church, and the interment will be made in Fairview cemetery. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Monday, July 1, 1889, page 4
