Sell, a native of Blair county and a former teacher in the county schools, died last night at 8.30 o'clock at his home in Central City, Somerset county. Mr. Sell had been in failing health for the past year and in February of this year was a patient for a time in a New York hospital. Mr. Sell was the son of John and Susan (Isenberg) Sell and was born on the father's farm at Leamersville Feb. 28, 1866. He grew to manhood on the farm and attended the village school, later taking normal school courses preparatory to taking up the teaching profession. He taught school in East Freedom for a number of years and in the late 1890s, when the Berwind-White Coal company opened the coal industry in Somerset county and founded the town of Windber, Mr. Sell, along with a number of other Blair countians, went to Windber. Soon after going to Windber Mr. Sell was appointed to the office of justice of the peace and was subsequently was [sic] reelected for a number of terms. Later he went to Central City where he became general manager of the Reitz Coal company and in 1936 was elected justice of the peace for Central City, serving until his retirement some years ago. Mr. Sell was twice married, the first union being with Elda Crist. To this union one son and one daughter were born, Frederick Sell of Windber and Mrs. Dorothy Venduer of Johnstown. Also surviving are his second wife, Mrs. Goldie Sell, and a son, John, to this union, and six step-sons. Also surviving are three brothers and one sister, Lafayette Sell of McKee, Brooke Sell of Roaring Spring, Blair Sell of Newry and Mrs. June A. Brumbaugh of Huntingdon. One brother and one sister, Harry Sell and Mrs. Bertha DeHass, are deceased. A number of nephews and nieces reside in Altoona and throughout Blair county. Sell will be conducted Sunday afternoon, the cortege leaving the home in Central City at 2 o'clock for the church where services will be at 2.30 o'clock. SELL [photo] Mr. Sell, aged 82, and a native of Blair county, died Thursday night at Central City, Somerset county, where he resided for a number of years. He taught school at East Freedom and served subsequently as justice of the peace at Windber and Central City.
