H. A. Hoffman, secretary of Altoona lodge, No. 473, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, last evening received a dispatch from Platsmouth, Neb., announcing the death at that place Wednesday morning of Joseph L. Shafer, who went west several months ago to live with his daughter. The deceased was a member of the One Hundred and Twenty-fifth Pennsylvania volunteers. He belonged to the Methodist Episcopal church and during his long residence in this city was a member of the First church. He is a member of Altoona lodge No. 473, Rebekah lodge No. 21, and of Altoona encampment No. 129, Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He resigned his position as assistant foreman in the Pennsylvania Railroad company planing mill, when he went west on April 1. Morning Tribune, Altoona, Pa., Saturday, August 26, 1899
