Shaffer Jr., 81, 215 Greenlee Lane, Pennsylvania Furnace, formerly of Williamsburg, passed away early Tuesday morning, March 23, 2004, at Mount Nittany Medical Center, State College after a brief illness. He was born March 22, 1923 in Williamsburg, son of the late John M. and Elsie (Justice) Shaffer. He married Yvonne J. Havens on May 2, 1945 in Winchester, VA. She died June 28, 1991. Mr. Shaffer was affiliated with the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. He retired as a water treatment plant operator from Penn State University, State College in 1986 with nine years of service and previously was employed as powerhouse operator at Westvaco, Williamsburg with more than 30 years of service. Mr. Shaffer had attended Williamsburg schools. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving with the aircraft carrier USS Cabot in the Pacific Theater from April 2, 1943 to Nov. 23, 1945, attaining the rank of seaman first class. Mr. Shaffer enjoyed flea markets, yard sales, playing cards, war memorabilia and spending time with his family. He was a member of Juniata Lodge 282, F & AM, Hollidaysburg, the Williamsburg VFW Memorial Post and the Bonner-Sollenberger American Legion Post, Williamsburg. Surviving are two sons: Glenn H. (wife, Darlene) of Harrisburg and Jack (wife, Wanda) of Altoona; a daughter, Joyce A. Haney (husband, Randy) of Spruce Creek; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister Nelie R. of Williamsburg; a special friend, Caroline M. Burk of Tyrone RR 2; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers; Ralph and James; and a sister, Dorothy Forsht. Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Williamsburg, where funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday by Pastor Paul R. Campbell. Interment, with military honors, will be held at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Petersburg. The family suggests memorial contributions be given to your favorite charity. Tyrone Daily Herald, March 24, 2004
