A most distressing accident occurred at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Shaffer at Kladder Station, in Blair township, yesterday afternoon. During the temporary absence of the mother from the house, John, aged 4 years, their youngest child, began playing with matches and squibs. The child's clothing caught fire from the matches, and before his agonizing cries could bring aid and relief, he was burned beyond recovery. Dr. Twitmire was summoned from Newry, but the best his medical skill could avail was to alleviate the pain. Last evening the physician said that the child could not live. Mr. Shaffer is employed in the Altoona shops. There are four children in the family. Mr. John G. McGraw, the well known Blair township farmer, is a grandfather of the little unfortunate.
