Shaffer, a resident of Altoona, Pa., and one of the best engineers in the employ of P.R.R. was so badly injured when he jumped from the cab of his engine that he died that evening in the Kittanning hospital where he was taken immediately after the accident. It seems that a flue burst in Mr. Shaffer's engine which caused the cab to fill with steam to such an extent that nothing could be seen. The engineer, fireman and conductor, the last two named being in the cab also at the time, jumped. The fireman and conductor landed safely, but Mr. Shaffer's legs were thrown under the wheels of the engine and both were severed. The unfortunate man is survived by one daughter and two sons, his wife having died last November. His body was taken to Altoona for burial.
