He was born in Blair County on December 25, 1833. He came to Clearfield County and was married to Mary Ann Braniff on August 19th, 1859. He enlisted in Company F 96th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers in the Union Army on August 27th, 1863 for the term of three years and was appointed sergeant in the above named company and regiment on July 7th, 1865 at Raleigh, North Carolina and promoted to 2nd Lieutenant under War Governor Andrew G. Curtin. He received his discharge July 6, 1865 at Raleigh, N. C. Veteran John Shay spent nearly his entire married life in the vicinity of Utahville, Clearfield County, where all his children grew up and attended the public schools with the young people of their age. The writer of these lines being employed as a teacher for a number of terms at Utahville during the school age of the older children of the family, he is in a position to know whereof he speaks and takes pleasure in testifying to the peaceable, kindly disposition of the daily and especially the many amiable duties of the subject of these lines. Besides being a good soldier as evidenced by these promotions, faithful in devotion to his country he was likewise an excellent citizen and was trusted with important offices by his neighbors. The large concourse of friends and neighbors of earlier years who followed to his last resting place gave abundant evidence of the respect and will of those who knew him best during the years of his active life. To his family he was a kind and indulgent father and a devoted husband to his estimable companion who preceded him but a short time to the grave. To this union came twelve children, of whom are living, as follows: Cornelius P., Mrs. Kathryn Kanover,* --?--ias,** Mrs. Ella M. Brown, Mrs. ----?tine Hullihen, H. Paul, James, Frank M., Bert and Mrs. Della ----?sler, Johnnie and Charlie deceased. There are twenty-four grand-children living and one great-grand child. Veteran John Shay was 82 years, 6 months and 17 days old at the time of his death. He was brought to his old home at Utahville for burial where he rests beside his life companion with whom I never heard of a single unkind word. Rev. H. H. Flick, Jr., of Glasgow Lutheran church and of which Mr. Shay was a member in Pittsburgh, preached a most effective sermon and gave some data in connection with Lieutenant Shay's admission into that church. Funeral services were held in the United Brethren Church. Undertaker R. E. Hunter in charge. ___ R. T. Another one of Tyrone's oldest and most familiar residents passed away at 7.30 o'clock last evening when Dennis Shea breathed his last at his home on North Pennsylvania avenue. Mr. Shea had been afflicted with total blindness for the past four years but until last week he had continued in good health, patiently and cheerfully bearing his affliction. Last Friday, however, he suffered a stroke of paralysis, and though he remained conscious almost to the hour of his death, he never spoke after he had been stricken. The deceased was born in County Kerry, Ireland, August 15, 1815, and was aged at death 78 years and 5 months. At the age of 19 he came to America and traveled about this country from place to place until in 1865? He settled in Tyrone where he had ever since resided. He was employed by the P.R.R. company in the Tyrone railroad yard until four years ago when on account of his blindness he was obliged to relinquish his work. In 1861 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Catharine Russell, and to this union were born six children, three of whom preceded their father to the grave. Surviving are his wife, two sons and one daughter: John Shea, of Pittsburg; Mrs. Mary Malady and James Shea, of Tyrone. They have the sympathy of the community in the loss of a tender husband, a kind father, a good neighbor and a true friend. He was a lifelong member of the Catholic church and died in the implicit hope which his faith taught him. Requiem mass will be celebrated by Rev. Father D. J. Gallagher at St. Matthew's chapel at 9 o'clock Thursday morning. Interment in the Catholic cemetery. Altoona Mirror, January 4, 2006 _______________________________________________ PATRICK SHEA On Saturday Morning last, Mr. Patrick Shea, of this city lost his life. He left the city early in the morning with his son for the purpose of getting him employment with a farmer near Kittanning Point and while walking on the westward railroad track, he observed a train following him and passing over to the east track he was struck by another train, thrown down an embankment and instantly killed. His son escaped the fate of his father. Mr. Shea was an industrious and hard-working man - a shoemaker by trade but was employed in the nighttime in some capacity about the Round House of the Railroad Company's shops and through the day devoted some hours to his trade. He leaves a wife and six children to mourn his untimely and irreparable loss. This is another sad warning to all persons, who will persist in walking upon railroad tracks, not knowing what moment they may be overtaken and run down by trains on either track.
