Jacob F. Shearer, former pastor of the Second Lutheran church of this city, died at his home in Somerset at 8 o'clock yesterday morning of softening of the brain. The deceased had been in failing health for several months past. Rev. Shearer was born in Centre county, near Bellefonte, November 8, 1833. He was educated at the Susquehanna Institute. Later he entered Wittenberg college, Springfield, O., and was graduated from there in 1864. He immediately took up the study of theology, with the intention of entering the Lutheran ministry. He was ordained and assigned to his charge at Bellefontaine, O. In 1876 he was elected to the pastorate of the Second Lutheran church of Altoona, ably filling the pulpit her for seven years. In 1883 he was assigned to the Somerset charge. In 1890 the Rev. Mr. Shearer went to Conshohocken, Montgomery county, and during his seven years pastorate there, and through the financial crisis of that period, he succeeded in erecting St. Marks church. About this time her retired from the ministry and after spending some time in Philadelphia, returned to Somerset when 70 years of age. While there he was appointed deputy factory inspector. Rev. Shearer was married three times, His first wife died very soon after their marriage. His second wife was Miss Frances HANNAM , and to this union two children were born, both of whom survive, as follows: Mrs. Georgia BURNS of Philadelphia, and Gordon Kent Shearer of El Paso, Tex. His second wife died at Somerset. His third wife was Mrs. Elizabeth MANN, who before her first marriage was Miss Elizabeth ANTHONY. Mrs. Shearer survives her husband. The deceased was a member of George Smith post, Grand Army of the Republic, located at Conshohocken. The funeral will most likely take place Thursday afternoon.
