Shorter, an aged and well known colored citizen of this city, passed quietly away at his home, 1103 Sixteenth street, at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. He had been ailing for years with diseases due to advanced age, and though his death was not unexpected, it case a gloom over the many friends of the family. Mr. Shorter was born at Barree, Huntingdon county, 78 years ago. In his early life he learned the barber trade, which he followed until 1885, when he retired from business. His last shop was located at Eleventh avenue and Sixteenth street. Before and during the war Mr. Shorter lent many a helping hand to fugitive slaves, doing all that he could to assit the less fortunate to the land of freedom. All his life he was interested in ameliorating the condition of his people everywhere. In local affairs he was a good citizen in the best sense of the expression. Mr. Shorter was twice married. His second wife, Mary A., and these children survive: John H. Shorter and Mrs. Phoebe Johnson, of this city, and James Shorter, of Bellefonte. He was a prominent member of the African Methodist Episcopal church, where funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock to-morrow afternoon, in charge of the pastor, Rev. J. W. Young.
