Plum Creek Farmer Dead - Passed Away Early Friday Morning - Andrew Smith, A Well Known Citizen. WAS TWICE MARRIED. Second Wife and Fourteen Children are Living - Lived Many Years on Farm Where He Died - Funeral Tuesday Morning. Andrew Smith, one of the county's oldest residents and one of the best known citizens of Taylor township died shortly after midnight Friday night at his home on Plum Creek, a mile east of Roaring Spring. Mr. Smith died on the farm where he lived for many years. For several years he had been in failing health and death was the result of advanced age. He was born June 30, 1825, being the son of John and Sarah Smith. In early manhood he joined the Lutheran church but about thirty-five years ago his church affiliations changed to the Reformed church at East Sharpsburg, being one of the most prominent members of the latter congregation. Mr. Smith was twice married. His first wife was Miss Annie Myers who became Mrs. Smith in 1848. She died eight years later. Some time after the death Mr. Smith was wed to Emma Wilderson of Roaring Spring. He was the father of fifteen children, three being to the first union and twelve to the latter. Fourteen of the children, seven boys and seven girls, survive. They are: George and Daniel Smith of Roaring Spring, John and Eli Smith of Plum Creek, Albert of Hollidaysburg, Thaddeus of Lakemont and William of Henrietta, Mrs. Sarah Snare and Mrs. Mary Brown of Roaring Spring, Mrs. Lydia Snoberger, Mrs. Elsie Reighard and Mrs. Zella Merkle of Plum Creek, Mrs. Lucretia Smeltzer and Mrs. Minnie Stacey of Lakemont. The widow and one brother, Eli Smith of Virginia, also survive. Mr. Smith had the distinction of being the oldest man in Morrison's Cove, being past 90 years of age. The funeral took place at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning with services in the Reformed church at East Sharpsburg, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Elias S. Noll. Interment was made in Roaring Spring, in Greenlawn cemetery. Martinsburg Herald, March 17, 1916
