On Saturday evening at about 8 o'clock Daniel Smith, a well-known resident of the Seventh ward, was very seriously injured at the Ninth street crossing. He was about half-way over when one of the yard engines came along and struck him. Smith did not notice it, and as he approached on the left hand side the engineer could not see him. He fell on the crossing between the wheels and was dragged about the length of the engine before it could be stopped. Fortunately no wheels struck him, but the dragging made terrible injuries. He was picked up and taken to the Despatcher's office. An examination by the company physician showed that one leg was injured, the right arm was badly broken, one ear was torn off, the jaw bone was broken and that he had a great hole in his side. There were numerous other cuts and bruises all over his body. The wounds were bound up and the man was made comfortable as possible, but it is very doubtful whether he will recover. He is a young man and was formerly employed in the railroad company's lower paint shop. His residence is in the Seventh ward, opposite the shops.
