All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _______________________________________________ ILLNESS FATAL TO FRANK SMITH Frank Smith, 79, well known retired employe of the Altoona school district and residing at 1123 Seventh Avenue, died at the Altoona Hospital at 9:14 o'clock this morning from a complication of diseases after having been under treatment in the institution since December 8. Mr. Smith spent forty-one years in the service of the local school district and retired from active duty in 1922. He was for many years caretaker at the Penn school. The deceased was born in New Baltimore, May 10, 1853, the son of Charles and Mary Smith. When a youth, he located in Cumberland, Md., where he learned the trade of cabinetmaker. He subsequently was married to Miss Mary Fleegle of Bedford county who died thirty-six years ago. Following marriage, Mr. and Mrs. smith came to this city and Mr. Smith first worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad company in the Fourth Street car shops, later becoming an employe of the school district. There are two daughters and one son surviving, all residents of this city, Mrs. Gertrude Galbraith, Mrs. P. J. McCauley and Leo Smith. One sister, Mrs. Annie Satterfield, and these brothers also survive; Joseph Smith of Altoona, Charles Smith of New Alexandria, Alfred Smith of Johnstown and Maurice Smith of New Baltimore. There are five grandchildren and four great- grandchildren. Mr. Smith was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel church where the funeral is to be held Friday morning with a requiem mass at 9 o'clock. Interment will follow in Calvary cemetery. The remains may be viewed at the Stevens Memorial Chapel. Altoona Mirror, Wednesday, December 28, 1932
