All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _______________________________________________ HUGH SMITH, An Old and Respected Citizen, of Gaysport, Died at his home at that place, this morning at 4 o'clock, of diseases incident to old age. He had been ailing for several months. Deceased was born in Kilkern, County Galway, Ireland, June 22, 1819. For five years he served on the police force of Dublin, Ireland. At the age of 23 he came to America and settled in Gaysport, where he has since resided. When the war of the rebellion broke out he enlisted as a color bearer in the Eighty- fourth regiment, Pennsylvania volunteer infantry. He was twice wounded in the second battle of Winchester, in which Col. William G. Murray lost his life. He was shot down with his flag and was dangerously wounded. He served for a number of years as a tax collector for the borough of Gaysport. He also has filled the office of burgess and assessor. He was an enthusiastic G.A.R. man and was a member of the William G. Murray post, No. 39, G.A.R. On April 11, 1949, he was married to Catharine Brody. Fourteen children were born to this union, ten of whom survive: Mrs. Mary Davis, Hagerstown, Md.; Mrs. Berdelia Clay, Cleveland, O.; Mrs. Annie M. Prendergast, Roanoke, Va.; Mrs. Rosetta Carlin, Pittsburg, Pa.; Mrs. Catharine Van Handt [Van Zandt], Altoona; Julia and Retta, of Gaysport; Thomas, John and Steele, of Hollidaysburg. He is also survived by one brother, Prof. Thomas Smith, of Illiopolis, Ill. The deceased was a constant member of St. Mary's Catholic church, of Hollidaysburg.
