His Death in This City on Thursday Night After a Lingering Illness. At midnight on Thursday, after a prolonged and painful illness, Mr. James Smith died at the residence of his sister, Miss Rachel Smith, No. 1422 Eighth street, aged about 62 years. He was born in Mifflin county, and by occupation was a farmer. While he was yet a young man he removed to Blair county and for some forty years had been a resident of Antis township, and her he owned a farm, to which as long as he was able so to do he devoted his time and labor. He was married there to Miss Matilda Collier, and to them were born eleven children, nine of whom are yet living. These are Mrs. Margaret Smith, who lives at Coleman's Mills; Miss Ann Smith, who lives at home; Woods, employed in the lower shops, and Nannie, William, John, Frank and Charles, who also live on the old homestead. The deceased was a soldier during the late war, but was not a member of any of the Grand Army organizations. About two years ago he became afflicted by a disease which as it developed was pronounced cancer. The disease continued to grow worse, despite the physician's skill, and last October he came to the city for the purpose of consulting the doctors. He was unable to return to his home and was taken to his sister's home where death ended his sufferings on Thursday night. During his long and painful illness he never complained, not even during the past month of his life when at times the pain was almost unendurable. Mr. Smith was well and favorably known throughout this city and county. He was a sober and industrious man and during his life, so long as he was able, worked almost daily upon his farm. In his death his sorrowing wife has lost an affectionate husband, his children a kind father and the county a good and law-abiding citizen.
