Smith, one of the oldest and best known residents of the Sixth ward, died at his home, 2001 Fourth avenue, at 9:30 o'clock yesterday morning of diseases incident to old age. He was born in Johnstown November 3, 1836 and came to Altoona when 16 years of age and had since resided here. Soon after coming here he entered the service of the Pennsylvania Railroad company, became a machinist and followed this trade until fifteen years ago when he resigned and had since lived a retired life. He was one of the oldest members of the First Lutheran church. He was twice married, his first union being with Miss Clementine Gibboney, of Duncansville, who preceded him to the grave in 1901. On April 28, 1909, he married Miss Mary A. Kessler, of Philadelphia, who survives, as do two sons to his first union, Forrest G., of Eldorado, and Melvin G., of this city, and one sister, Mrs. Charlotte A. Singer, of Johnstown. The funeral service will be held at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon with services at the house. Interment in Greenwood cemetery. Friends may view the remains from 6 to 9 o'clock this evening.
