Smith, veteran Altoona educator, the city has lost one of its outstanding contributors to the advancement of learning. Born at Marklesville, Perry county, Aug. 12, 1870, Mr. Smith prepared for his extended career in education at the Lock Haven Normal school, from which he was graduated in 1894. Mr. Smith came to Altoona in 1895 as principal of the Curtain school, then in Logan township. Two years later he became principal of the Miller school in the city, where he served for eight years. He served another eight-year period as principal of Adams school and then seven years as principal of the Penn and Madison schools. In 1924, after additional service at the Adams, Allegheny and Curtin schools, Mr. Smith became attendance director for the Altoona school district, retaining this position until his retirement in 1933. Mr. Smith was a member of the First Lutheran church and the Henry Baker Bible class, of Hiram lodge 616, F. and A.M., Mountain council 9, Mountain Royal Arch chapter 189, Mountain commandery 10, Knights Templar, and of Jaffa temple. A modest and unassuming man who took a sincere interest in his work, Mr. Smith contributed a great deal to the steady growth of the city's school system. His passing is mourned by a host of friends and acquaintances. Altoona Mirror, Friday evening, July 16, 1948, page 8 FUNERAL NOTICE SMITH - Funeral services for Lester C. Smith of 1108 Twenty-second avenue, will be held at 8 o'clock this evening at the John P. Lafferty funeral home in charge of Rev. Luke H. Rhoads, pastor of the First Lutheran church. The cortege will leave Altoona at 9 o'clock Saturday morning for Newport and interment will be in Newport cemetery. Friends are being received at the John P. Lafferty funeral home.
