SMYTH, A FORMER RESIDENT, DIES IN TITUSVILLE. The older members of the former volunteer fire department of Altoona will learn with regret of the death of Alexander A. Smyth who died at his home in Titusville on Saturday last. He was aged 84 years and death was the result of disease incident to age. He was the first chief of Altoona's fire department, having been appointed by council in 1867. On April 21, 1859, he presided at the meeting which led to the organization of the Good Will company No. 1 and was a member of the committee to draft a constitution and set of by-laws for the same, and which were adopted on May 7 of the same year. For years he took an active part in matters concerning the fire department. Deceased is survived by three daughters and three sons: Mrs. Mary Gochnauer, Mrs. Susan Pancake, Mrs. Eliza McSorley, all of Altoona; Alex. Smyth, of Sistersville, Va.; William Smyth, of Wilmerding, Pa., and Robert Smyth, of Buffalo, N.Y. Morning Tribune, Tuesday, December 12, 1899
