"Knute" Snyder World War II Air Force Veteran Mr. Robert N. "Knute" Snyder, 80, a guest at Epworth Manor, and formerly of Hoover's Lane, died Saturday, February 23, 2002, at 11:50 p.m. at Tyrone Hospital. He was born January 8, 1922, at Tyrone, the son of Walter W. and Bessie M. Umholtz Snyder and on March 15, 1946, at State College was married to Alice Fleck who preceded him in death on February 7, 1993. He is survived by one son, Philip S. (Rosalind) Snyder, of Tyrone; one daughter Ellen S. (Charles) Wallace, of Tyrone RD1; three grandchildren: Leslie, traveling in China; Beth at Grier School, and Chase E. at home; four step-grandchildren: James Haupt, Lisa Snyder and Angela Givler, all of Tyrone, and Randolph McElwain, of Hollidaysburg; six step-great-grandchildren and two step-great-great grandchildren; a sister Louise Wertz, of Tyrone; a brother, Jack Snyder of Warren; and his Epworth Family who provided much loving care. He was an active member of the Northwood Baptist Chapel and served at one time as a member of the Tyrone Area High School Board. He was a graduate of Tyrone High School, Class of 1941, and attended Penn State. He retired from West Virginia Pulp and Paper Company as lead electrician in September after 38 years service. Mr. Snyder played football at Tyrone Area High School, and was a member of the championship team of 1940 which played at Shenandoah for the state championship. He was a veteran of service with the United States Air Force in WWII serving with the 416th Bomb Group in the European Theatre and was the recipient of the European-African Middle Eastern service medal with six bronze stars. Private funeral services for Mr. Snyder will be held at the convenience of the family with Reverend Paul Switzer officiating. Interment will be made in Grandview Cemetery. It is the request of the deceased that there be no flowers or contributions. Arrangements are under the direction of the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home, Inc. Tyrone Daily Herald, February 25, 2002
