SNYDER William Lemontine Snyder, whose death at his summer home, Athenia, N.J., at 8:30 o'clock on Saturday evening, December 2, was briefly announced yesterday morning, was a native of Hollidaysburg, where he was born May 10, 1848, so that he had entered his 69th year at the time of his decease. Death was due to heart failure, superinduced by hardening of the arteries, from which he suffered for the last three years. He was the son of Jacob and Catherine Snyder, who were among Hollidaysburg's most useful residents for many years. He passed youth and young manhood at Hollidaysburg and received his education in the public schools of that borough and in the preparatory school conducted by Professor John Miller, who was at a later period the first superintendent of Altoona's public schools. He began his legal studies in the office of Colonel James F. Milliken and was graduated from the law department of Columbia university in the class of 1874. He was admitted to the bar of New York city immediately and continued in the active practice of his profession until a few days before his death. Mr. Snyder occupied an honored place as a member of the bar of New York city. He was a successful practitioner from the start and remained a close student all his life. He was the author of several legal text books that have become standard in the profession. He likewise wrote other books, among them a very interesting one entitled "The Geography of Marriage." His last literary production, "The Military Annals of Greece," came from the Badger Press, Boston, just a year ago. This was a remarkable achievement, standing alone in the annals of American literature. Mr. Snyder is survived by his wife and two brothers, Hon. Plymouth W. Snyder, of Hollidaysburg, and George B. Snyder, M.D., of Hays City, Kansas. He had many friends in Blair county who will learn with deep regret of his death. He was respected for his original genius, his literary attainments, his genial and cordial manners and the sincerity and depth of his convictions concerning public affairs, as well as for the loyalty with which he always remembered his friends. Funeral services were held yesterday at 2:45 o'clock, at his late home, conducted by Rev. Dr. Scudder, of the Reformed church. The interment will be at Hollidaysburg this afternoon on the arrival of the 1:29 train from Altoona. The cortege will proceed directly to the cemetery.
