March 14, 1935] Died at her home in Taylor Township, Roaring Spring RFD, Thursday afternoon at 2:15 o'clock, death being attributed to a cerebral hemorrhage. She was born near Martinsburg on July 4, 1874, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Burket and was united in marriage with Calvin K. Stern on Sept. 27 1900, who survives, with two sons, Clair of State College and Glen, at home; one sister, Mrs. Susan Smith of Roaring Spring, and one brother, John Burket of Hollidaysburg. She was a lifelong member of the Martinsburg Church of God, where the funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock in charge of the pastor. Interment will be made in the Fairview cemetery of Martinsburg. ________ Catherine STERN Altoona Morning Tribune Friday, May 13, 1904 Mrs. Catherine Stern Passes to Her Reward At 1.10 o'clock Thursday afternoon Mrs. Catherine Stern died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Edward McGraw, 1412 Seventh avenue. The deceased was stricken some seven months ago, but apparently recovered and was much improved in health. On Wednesday, however, she was a gain stricken and from the effects of this stroke she was destined not to recover. Her death came as a great shock to the members of her family. The deceased was the widow of Peter B. Stern. Her maiden name was Young and she was born at Maria Forges, March 4, 1839, and was therefore aged 65 years, 2 months and 8 days. She was married to Peter B. Stern at Claysburg, August 15, 1861, and he died six years ago last August. For twenty-five years she had been a resident of Altoona and was respected by all who knew her. She was a member of the Church of God. Mrs. Stern is survived by the following children: Harry P. and Morrell Stern, of McKeesport; Mrs. J. F. Rock, Jacob B. Stern, Mrs. Edward McGraw, and Mrs. M. L. Henry, of Altoona; and Mrs. Charles Leach, of Pen Yan, N. Y. She also leaves these sisters and Brothers: Mrs. Westley McKee, of Roaring Spring; Mrs. Davis Smaltz and Mrs. Levi Nicodemus, of Altoona; Henry Young, of Pittsburgh, and William Young, of Tyrone. The funeral services will be held at her late home at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Interment in Oak Ridge cemetery. ________ Fred K. STERN November 28, 1952 A retired farmer and a member of Morrison Cove Cooperative association for 12 years, died at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning at his home. He was born at Roaring Spring, R. D., Taylor Township, Aug. 5, 1870, a son of John and Elizabeth (Kauffman) Stern, and was married to Mary Ellen Snowberger Dec. 19, 1899, at Curryville by Rev. John B. Miller. Surviving are his widow, the following children: Mrs. John H. May, Breezewood; Mrs. L. N. Ray of Altoona, J. Kenneth of State College, Mrs. Ernest Lewis of Swarthmore and Miss Marie Stern at home; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Stern was a member of the Curryville Church of the Brethren. He was a retire farmer, having farmed the home farm in Taylor Township for about 35 years, retiring 16 years ago. Interment was made today. ________ Oelin STERN Altoona Mirror January 11, 1901 Oelin Stern son of Frederick and Mary Stern. Aged 3 months, died yesterday at 142 Seventh Avenue. Interment at cemetery at Carryville. ________ Peter B. STERN Wednesday, August 25, 1897 He died of Cancer of the Stomach Yesterday Morning At 10:30 o'clock yesterday forenoon Peter B. Stern died of cancer of the stomach at his home, 2408 West Chestnut avenue. He had been suffering for two years with the disease that caused his death, and last summer he went to the University hospital at Philadelphia for treatment, returning home, however, without being cured. December 28, 1896, and operation was performed, which failed to produce the desired result. For nine weeks before his death he was confined to his bed. Mr. Stern was born near Martinsburg, in Bedford county, March 12, 1839. He was the son of Peter and Mary Stern, both deceased . He lived near Martinsburg for twenty-five years, and on August 15, 1861, he married Catherine C. Young, after which he resided at Roaring Spring until the year 1877, when he went to Iowa with his family. He remained in Iowa less than a year, however, and on returning east lived at Eldorado about a year and a half. He came to Altoona in 1879, and has resided at 2408 West Chestnut avenue ever since. The deceased was a contractor in the plastering trade. He served as constable of the Fifth ward for a number of years and was afterwards railroad policeman on the Pittsburgh division for two years. He was a member of the First Church of God, Fifth avenue and Thirteenth street, and belonged to the Roaring Spring lodge of Odd Fellows. Besides his wife he is survived by the following sons and daughters: Harry P., of McKeesport; Mrs. J. F. Rock, Mrs. M. L. Henry, Mrs. F. C. McGraw, all of Altoona, and Morrell, William, Jacob and Irene, at home. Four brothers survive him: Samuel, of Massilon, Ohio; Andrew, of Bedford County; and John and Jacob, of Blair county. The funeral services will be conducted at the home of the deceased on Thursday at 2 p.m., by Rev. C. D. Rishel. The remains will be interred in Oak Ridge cemetery.
