All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _______________________________________________ James Morrison Stevens, an old and well known resident of Altoona, where he had lived for the past twenty-five years, died at his home, 1028 Third avenue, at 3 yesterday of senile gangrene, which made its appearance about two weeks ago. Deceased was born at Rockdale Foundry, near Williamsburg, Aug. 19, 1827, and was a son of Samuel R. and Eliza Pennell Stevens. He was taken into the Methodist Episcopal church at Williamsburg, Jan. 23, 1840, by Rev. Samuel Blake, of the old Baltimore conference. On Jan. 23, 1853, he was married at Williamsburg to Miss Rachael Houck, by Rev. John Thrush. Deceased was in the United Mail service for twenty-three years - three years, 1853-54-55, in Williamsburg, and eighteen years in this city. Four years ago failing health forced him to leave the government service and since that time he had done nothing. Previous to becoming a mail carrier, Mr. Stevens was employed as a painter in the shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad company under Foreman Mason. He was always a strictly temperate man, a lifelong Republican and at the time of his death a member of the Eighth avenue Methodist Episcopal church. He was the father of two children - Samuel, deceased, and Miss Julia M. One sister, Mrs. Robert Johnson, of Johnstown, also survives. The funeral will take place from the late home Thursday afternoon. Services will be conducted by Rev. George Murray Klepfer at 4, and interment will be made in Oak Ridge cemetery.
