Stewart, 84, of 1401 Lincoln ave., a lifetime resident of Tyrone, a leader in music circles, and the son of pioneer settlers of Tyrone, died Sunday at 6:30 a.m. in Tyrone Hospital where he had been a patient since Tuesday, following a stroke. He was born in Tyrone, Aug. 31, 1873, the son of the Rev. John D. and Margaret Schell Stewart. He married Mary H. Neff, Tyrone, on March 12, 1901. He is survived by his widow, two sons, Calvin N. of Harrisburg, and Dr. Harry L. Stewart, Jr., of Santa Barbara, Calif., and four grandchildren. Stewart was a member of the First Methodist church, of the Men's Bible class and the Methodist Men's organization of the church. He was a member of Rotary, and was one of the oldest graduates of Dickinson Seminary, now Lycoming College, at Williamsport, graduating in the class of 1896. He was an employee of the Tyrone post office for 48 years, starting on July 1, 1897, as a substitute mail carrier. Later he was the first rural carrier, inaugurating Route No. l through Sinking Valley. He was made a clerk in 1901 and was appointed superintendent of mails on March 01, 1913, and served until retirement on Aug. 31, 1945. His parents were among the early Tyrone settlers and his father, a traveling pastor, was one of the community's first businessmen. Stewart was, for more than 50 years a leading musician and musical director, playing organ in several Tyrone and Altoona churches and directing cantatas and musicals for various churches. He also had lead roles in directing minstrel and comic opera shows. He directed the Tyrone City and Sheridan bands. He played baseball on early Tyrone teams and was a local lawn tennis champion. Funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the First Methodist church, in charge of the Rev. Roy O. Bodtorf, assisted by the Rev. Harry C. Stenger. Friends will be received at the home after noon on Tuesday and until noon on Wednesday. Arrangements are in charge of the Graham and Getz funeral home.
