All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _______________________________________________ Canoe Creek Veteran Dies Charles Sylvanus Stiffler, well known resident of Canoe Creek and a veteran of the Spanish-American war, died this morning at 6 o'clock at his home, death being attributed to a complication of ailments. He was a son of Sylvanus and Elizabeth Jane (Shellenberger) Stiffler and was born at Hollidaysburg, April 22, 1873. His father lost his life in a railroad accident in the Gallitzin tunnel many years ago while serving as a freight conductor on the Pennsylvania railroad. Mr. Stiffler was a member of the old company C, 5th regiment P.N.G., and served as a sergeant in that company during the Spanish-American war. He was a member of Camp Joseph F. Robinson Spanish-American War Veterans of Hollidaysburg. For a number of years he was employed at the Horrell powder works and later followed painting and paperhanging and retired a few years ago. He served for some years as a school director in Frankstown township and was a member of the canoe Creek Methodist church, and of the Hollidaysburg lodge of Odd Fellows. He was united in marriage with Mary Ann Walls in Hollidaysburg by Rev. W.W. Anstedt on July 31, 1902, who survives, with these sons and daughters: Walter Stiffler and Mrs. Wallace Myers, both of Altoona, Mrs. Jesse Smith of Hollidaysburg, Mrs. John Kensinger, Mrs. Cecil Clapper and Frank Stiffler, all of Canoe Creek and Charles, jr., in the United States navy, now stationed in California. Also surviving is one brother, W. Harry Stiffler of Duncansville. STIFFLER - Funeral services for Charles Sylvanus Stiffler will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock in the Canoe Creek United Brethren church in charge of Rev. Julian Park. Interment in the United Brethren cemetery. Friends are being received at the home at Canoe Creek.
