Aged Resident of Tipton Struck by Manhattan Limited and Ground Under a Freight Train This Morning. Samuel Strong, an aged resident of Tipton, ten miles east of Altoona, met a horrible death on the Pennsylvania railroad this morning, shortly before 7 o'clock. He was run down by Manhattan limited, hurled across the tracks in front of a local freight train and ground under the wheels of the latter train. The body was badly mangled. It was picked up and sent to Tyrone, where Undertaker Butley prepared it for burial. Mr. Strong was gathering coal along the railroad at the time of the accident. It has been his custom to gather coal, and he was usually careful to avoid trains by keeping well to the side of the tracks. He became confused this morning by the trains and stepped directly in front of the limited. Mr. Strong was aged 79 years. He lived many years at Tipton and was well-to-do. Besides his aged wife, he leaves one son, G. W. Strong, a merchant at Tyrone. The remains will be sent to his late home this afternoon. Deputy Coroner H. W. McCartney is investigating the case, but is not likely to hold an inquest. Altoona Mirror, Thursday, August 11, 1904, p. 1 This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/pafiles/
