Sullivan, 88, of 1135 Larkspur Lane, Carlsbad, Calif. and a former Tyrone resident died Monday, Nov. 24, 2003 at his home. He was born Aug. 26, 1915 in Tyrone, the son of William and Sabrina Hewel Sullivan and in June 1951 at St. Matthew's Catholic Church, was married to Rita V. Burka Robinson who preceded him in death on Feb. 12, 1985. He is survived by four children, Robert and wife Kathy of Carlsbad; Rita Turnbull of Carlsbad; William and wife Kristen of Vista, Calif. and James and Mary Ellen of Fallbrook, Calif.; nine children and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons and a daughter and was the last of his immediate family. Mr. Sullivan was a graduate of Tyrone High School, Class of 1934 and prior to induction into the United States Army on April 7, 1941, managed various Acme Markets in the area. Following his basic army training, he was sent to Hawaii and participated in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. He was part of the invasion of Bouganville, Solomon Islands in 1943 and later was stationed in the Fiji Islands and Guadalcanal. While stationed at Bouganville, he was appointed warrant officer and received the Bronze Star for meritorious service during the invasion of Bouganville, Solomon Islands. From 1949 until 1962, Mr. Sullivan owned and operated Sully's Sweet Shop in Tyrone. In 1960 he was appointed Blair County Director of Veterans Affairs and Personal Property Department Head. He served as president of the Pennsylvania State Association of County Directors of Veterans Affairs in 1963-64. He was one of the organizers of the Tyrone Little League and served as president of the organization for 11 years. He was a charter member and Past Commander of VFW Post No. 4559 and had served as District Commander, District 22, VFW, Dept. of PA. He had served as a director of the Tyrone Chamber of Commerce; Tyrone Community Chest; Tyrone Chapter of the American Red Cross; as secretary of the District Little League organization comprising 15 cities; was vice-president of the Tyrone Playground Association for 15 years; was a member of the advisory board of the Salvation Army; served as secretary of the Tyrone Clubmen's Association; was president of the Veterans Home Association; was a member and past president of the Tyrone Lions Club; was a member of Howard Gardner Post 281 American Legion; Elks Lodge No. 221; served two terms on Tyrone Borough Council and was vice-chairman of the 100th Anniversary Celebration in Tyrone in 1957. In 1963, Mr. Sullivan and his family moved to California where he was employed as store manager of the Camp Pendelton Marine Corps. Exchange, retiring in 1984. He was a charter member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association Chapter 31 and served as president, historian, secretary and assistant National Gram Editor. He participated in the education of local students presenting the history and importance of Pearl Harbor. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and served on numerous committees and organizations within the church. Funeral Mass for Robert D. Sullivan will be held Monday, Dec. 1, 2003 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church followed by burial in Eternal Hills Cemetery, Carlsbad, Calif.
