Died at his residence, 1201 1/2 Thirteenth avenue, at 9:30 o'clock last night, of a congestive chill, which first attacked him at 10 o'clock Monday morning. The deceased was one of Altoona's oldest residents. He was born in Newry, County Down, Ireland, seventy-one years ago, and came to the United States in 1846. In this city, on August 15, 1865, he married Ellen Carroll. To the union two children were born - Ellen E., who died twenty-six years ago, and George F., now a student at the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Tate was a stonemason by trade and judiciously invested his savings in real estate, accumulating much valuable property, while others with better opportunities were wondering whether the two was to have a future or not. Since 1878 he lived retired. Mr. Tate crossed the Atlantic twice to visit his mother, who died a few years ago aged 110 years. He belonged to no organizations excepting the Vigilant fire company, of which he was a life member. The funeral will take place on Saturday morning at 8:30 o'clock, and not on Friday morning as announced in the morning papers. Requiem mass at St. John's Catholic church; interment in St. John's cemetery. Altoona Mirror, Wednesday, January 4, 1893
