All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _______________________________________________ Tipton Youth Killed Near Philipsburg Struck by the falling boom of a crane while assisting in laying a new sewer line in Chester Hill borough, near Philipsburg, Vernon James Taylor, aged 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. James M. Taylor of Tipton, apparently was killed instantly at 3.15 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Dr. Richard L. Williams, coroner of Clearfield county, reported that the youth suffered fractures of his neck, back and left arm and a severe laceration of the scalp and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Dr. J. P. Scott, who was called from the State hospital, Philipsburg. Vernon was employed by the B. & B. Construction company as a shovel operator and had walked over to a ditch to estimate the amount of fill required when the accident occurred. The operator reported that he shouted a warning of the falling boom but the youth looked up instead of jumping out of the way. The cause of the accident has not been determined. Vernon James Taylor was born at Tipton Jan. 8, 1928, a son of James M. and H. Dorothy (Hooper) Taylor. Surviving are his parents and one sister, Jolene Grace, all at home. He was a member of the Tipton Methodist church where he had served as secretary of the Sunday school for a number of years. He was graduated from the Bellwood-Antis High school in the class of 1946 and enlisted in the navy, serving for two years, being honorably discharged on April 12 of this year as a yeoman third class. While in High school he was a member of the varsity football team and also a member of the Whiting field Bombers football team while in the service. Friends will be received at the Fuoss mortuary, Bellwood, after 7 o'clock this evening. TAYLOR - Funeral services for Vernon James Taylor of Tipton, will be held Sunday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock at the Tipton Methodist church. Interment in Charlottesville cemetery.
