John Thomas Thompson, a native of this city, died at 6:35 Monday morning at his home in Buffalo N.Y. of valvular heart trouble. He was a son of Thomas A. and Mary A. Thompson, deceased, his parents being pioneer residents of the city. Mr. Thompson was born in Altoona March 18th, 1855. He spent the greater part of his life at Ridgway, Elk County, where he was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church, but for the last four years he had resided at Buffalo. He was a man esteemed by all who knew him. He is survived by a wife, Harriet Jane Thompson, and one daughter, Mrs. Lottie Farlow of Baltimore. He also leaves the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Scott Wilt of Greenwood, Mrs. Thomas Hanna of Lilly, Mrs. Albert Forsht and William Thompson of Juniata. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias, the Red Men, and the Brotherhood of locomotive Engineers. The body was received by the funeral directors Roher & Mauk of Juniata, and taken to the home of the sister, Mrs. Wilt of Greenwood, where the remains may be viewed at any time today. Funeral services will be held at the Wilt home at 2:30 tomorrow afternoon and will be private to relatives and friends. Internment will be made in Greenwood cemetery. _____ THOMPSON, S/Sgt. Leonard A. Altoona Mirror April 6, 1945 Tragic war department notification came to Mrs. Henrietta Thompson of 508 Third street Juniata, yesterday afternoon that the previous telegram listing her son, S/Sgt Leonard A Thompson as missing, must be amended to killed in action on April 5. The 29 year old platoon leader, well-known in this city when he was employed at Don's Esso station at Seventh avenue and Seventh street, had written home that he was engaged in ferreting out nazi machine gun nests, one of the toughest of infantry jobs. The last letter he sent home, received April 2 and postmarked March 29, told his family of hazardous fighting in devastated Germany. After entering the service Dec. 12, 1942, Sgt Thompson trained at camps Maxey and Swift, Tex. After a brief visit home, he reported to the fort George G. Meade, Md., staging area and went over-seas in March of 1944. A brief training period in England preceded his participation in the invitation of the European continent. Leonard Allen Thompson was born in Juniata, March 6, 1917, a son of William and Henrietta (Bratton) Thompson. He attended Altoona schools and was a graduated from Altoona High school in 1934. His father died some years ago. (1939) In addition to his mother, he is survived by the following brothers and sisters: William of 227 Seventh avenue, Juniata; Logan of Lewistown; Mrs. Mary Thompson Rock of Altoona; Rosanna and Jeannie at home; Mrs. Eleanor Black of Millerstown, PA. Sgt Thompson was a member of the Trinity Lutheran church of Juniata. His last known military unit in Europe was co. A, 121st infantry. - - - - - (NOTE: He is the grandson of Thomas Andrew (1821-1900), and Mary Anne (Rose) Thompson (1832-1906) of Juniata.) _____ THOMPSON, Logan Bratton, 2000 Lewistown Sentinel October 24th, 2000. Logan Bratton Thompson, 86, of 6 North Parkway court, Lewistown died at 3:45 p.m. Monday, October 23rd, 2000 at the Lewistown hospital. Born September 17th, 1914, in Altoona, he was the son of the late William and Henrietta (Bratton) Thompson. His wife Alma (Frederick) Thompson preceded him in death on September 11th, 1987. Surviving are children, C. Fred Thompson, 1128 West Fifth Street Lewistown, and Lynn A. Thompson, 215 Shady drive, Lewistown; sisters Eleanor Black, Liverpool, and Rosanna Ebersole, Altoona; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. He was supervisor at Noerr Motor Freight for 43 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of Grove memorial United Methodist Church. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Heller-Hoenstine Woodlawn funeral home, 200 North Main Street Lewistown, with the Reverend William J. Danis officiating. Internment will be in Juniata Memorial Park. Friends may call 7 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to: the Mifflin-Juniata American Cancer Society, 26 North Brown Street, Lewistown 4 PA, 17044. _____ THOMPSON, Mary (ROSE) Huntingdon Globe Jan 18, 1906 Mrs. Mary Thompson, one of the oldest residents of Juniata died on Saturday morning of dropsy at the residence of her son O.D. Thompson, with whom she had made her home for a number of years. She was born in Huntingdon county, the daughter of John and Sarah Rose, and was aged 73 years, 10 months and 20 days. She was a consistent member of the Methodist church for more than forty years. Six children, 32 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren survive. Funeral on Sunday; internment in Greenwood cemetery, Altoona. _____ THOMPSON, Oliver Doris Altoona Mirror August 21, 1917 Oliver Doris Thompson of 512 Third Avenue Juniata died at 6:00 this morning at his home of a complication of diseased after a brief illness. He was employed as a piece work inspector on the eastbound repair tracks and was a well-known musician. He was the son of Thomas A. and Mary A. Thompson, Both deceased. And was born April 18, 1872 at Etna Furnace. Most of his life was spent in Altoona and Juniata. On January 14th 1898 he was married to Miss Manie Mateer of this city, whose survives with three children. Mrs. Claude Wiser. John T. and Oliver Doris Jr., all at home. The following brothers and sisters also survive: John T. of Ridgway, William, Mrs. Maggie Bare and Mrs. Albert Forsht, all of Juniata, Mrs. Carrie Hanna of Lilly and Mrs. Scott Wilt of Greenwood. Mr. Thompson was a coronet player of ability and was leader of the East Altoona band and a member of the Altoona Car Shop band. He played in a number of the leading orchestras of the city. Thompson was a member of the Pennsylvania relief and the Eastbound Floral Association. The funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 in the First Methodist Church of Juniata with the pastor Reverend Alexander Lamberson in charge. Internment will follow in Greenwood cemetery. _____ THOMPSON, Thomas A. Altoona Mirror December 29, 1900 Thomas A. Thompson whose death at his home in Juniata was briefly noted in Thursday's mirror, was aged 79 years. He was born in Lebanon, PA, and in after years removed with his family to Blair County. He worked at his trade as furnaceman and engineer until within the last two years, when he retired on account of his age and health. He had been for years a consistent member of the Methodist Church, in which faith He died. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife, Mary A. Thompson, and the following children: John T., of Ridgway: Oliver Doris (O.D.),and William of Juniata; Mrs. Henry Bear and Mrs. Albert Forsht of Juniata, and Mrs. Scott Wilt and Mrs. Thomas Hanna, of Greenwood; also 31 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted in the Juniata Methodist Church tomorrow morning at 10:45, internment in Greenwood cemetery. - - - - Note, According to his age on Thomas's tombstone, his birthday was July 9, 1821, also confirmed by the Altoona mirror of July 8th 1899. Thomas can be traced to Shirley township Huntington county 1844 tax list. I have found no trace of him before this date, and any help would be appreciated. Thomas's middle initial "A", is for Andrew, according to family oral history. Between 1862 and 1877 the family moved several times between Blair and Huntington counties. Thomas and Mary first appear in Blair County in 1852. _____ THOMPSON, William, 1939 Altoona Mirror October 14, 1939 William Thompson of 508 3rd Street, Juniata, died at 8:50 Saturday evening after a three weeks' illness. He was born on July 10th, at 1877, at Blair Furnace, a son of Thomas and Mary Ann (Rose) Thompson. Mr. Thompson retired on September 17th 1936 from the westbound repair tracks after 38 years service. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Henrietta (Bratton) Thompson; seven sons and daughters: Logan of Yeagertown, Leonard, Mary B., William D., of Juniata, Rosanna and Jean, at home, and Mrs. Eleanor Black of Millerstown, and seven grandchildren. Mr. Thompson was of the Methodist faith; friends are being received at the Mauk and Yates funeral home. Altoona Mirror October 17, 1939 Thompson - funeral services for William Thompson of 508 3rd Street, Juniata will be conducted by Reverend Paul L. Friends are being received at the Mauk and Yates funeral home at any time. _____ THOMPSON, William D., 1998 Altoona Mirror Tuesday, December 15th, 1998 William D. "Bill" Thompson, 90, 227 Seventh Avenue, Juniata, died Sunday, December 13th, 1998, following a lengthy illness. He was born October 8th, 1908, in Altoona, the son of William and Henrietta (Bratton) Thompson. He married Pauline Bowman June 27th, 1934, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Juniata. She died July 1st, 1988. Mr. Thompson was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Juniata. He retired as a plant manager from Stroehmann's bakeries in 1973. Surviving are two sons: William D. Jr. of Altoona and Robert of LaGrange, Ky.; two sisters: Rosanna Ebersole of Altoona and Eleanor Black of Liverpool; a brother, Logan of Lewistown; five grandchildren; and one great grandson. Friends will be received from 6 to 9:00 p.m. today and 10 to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Mauk and Yates funeral Home Inc., Juniata. Thompson - services for William D.
