He was born in Hollidaysburg, son of William and Ada (Snare) Thompson. He married Loretta J. Long Dec. 11, 1943, in Altoona. She died June 22, 2002. William was a 1934 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School. He retired in 1979 from Berwind Railway Service Co. as an assistant general foreman after more than 40 years of service. He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, Hollidaysburg. He also was a member of Portage Lodge 220, F&AM, Valley of Altoona Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Jaffa Shrine and Hollidaysburg Sportsmen's Club and a member of the NRA for more than 50 years. William enjoyed fishing and hunting. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, 2009, at First United Methodist Church, Hollidaysburg, by the Rev. Dr. D. L. Brinton Shafer. Interment at Presbyterian Cemetery, Hollidaysburg. Arrangements are by Sorge Funeral Home, Hollidaysburg (www.sorgefuneralhome.com). Memorials may be given to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
