Caleb Tipton was the victim of that dread disease Consumption, which is so fatal in its results, and which is sapping the foundation of the lives of so many of the young of the present day. He enjoyed the acquaintance and esteem of a large number of our citizens, and when the terrible summons came to call him from earth away, he was prepared to welcome it, and died in the full hope of a thrice blessed immortality. While engaged in the active duties of life, it is true, he had his faults, and who has not? Yet, while we drop the last sad tear to his memory we must accredit him with his many virtues and try to emulate some of his excellent traits of character. He was indeed a friend of the poor and needy, and from the deserving destitute withheld not that aid which was in his power to bestow, being in possession of that charity which vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, nor doth not behave unseemly." And as he sleeps the long sleep that knows no waking this side of eternity, those of us who are permitted to stay yet a little longer, and who were so intimately acquainted with Caleb Tipton, will remember the bright spots in his character, and will endeavor to cherish the memory of one who was the life of the social circle.
