Howard Tipton died at the Mercy hospital at 12:45 this morning of apoplexy, after a brief illness. About 5:30 last evening he went into Roudabush's store, corner Sixth and Union avenues, and purchased an orange from the clerk, O. V. Stewart. He asked the clerk to cut it into quarters for him, which was done, and Mr. Tipton proceeded to the door, where he gave three of the pieces to as many boys who were there and started to eat the remaining one. Scarcely had he attempted to swallow it than he began to choke and called on one of the boys to strike him on the back, as he was choking. This was done but he obtained no relief and fell forward. Mr. Stewart endeavored to catch him before he fell but was unsuccessful; then he quickly stooped to his side, only to find him unconscious. He did all he could to revive him and Office B. F. Miller coming along, it was decided to take him to the Mercy hospital, which was done, and he was admitted. The efforts of physicians to revive him were unavailing and he died at the hour stated. The deceased was about 50 years old and was the son of the late E. B. and Hannah Tipton and was born at Elizabeth Furnace. With his parents he came to Altoona in 1862, and had since resided here. Surviving him are two brothers and one sister - Lewis and David Tipton and Mrs. Annie Miles.
