Tipton, of Martinsburg received a message from the war department at Washington yesterday, bringing the information that their son, Merl D. Tipton, had given his life for his country on the battlefield of France, being killed in action on Oct. 5. Besides his parents he is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Albert H., in France; Mrs. C. H. Paul of 1019 Twenty-first avenue, this city; Ralph G. and Mary, both at home. Mr. Tipton was among the quota of young men from the Hollidaysburg district who went to Camp Lee in March of this year. His brother, Albert, went at the same time and both young men trained together and when the boys were last heard from both were yet in the same unit overseas. The last letter received was written Sept. 21. They were just making ready to get into action along the Meuse river. The boys belonged to Company G, 419th infantry, 80th division. The dead soldier was born July 15, 1893, at Martinsburg. He was a member of the Church of God, the P.O.S. of A. and the I.O.O.F. He is the second Martinsburg boy to die on the battlefield recently, the father of Guy L. Bonner of that town last week receiving notice of the latter's death in action.
