All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _________________________________________ Avner Tomer Avner Tomer, 62, who resided in Miami, Florida passed away suddenly on Jan. 27, 2008 at 7 p.m. in Miami. Avner was born Dec. 31, 1945 in Asmara, Eritrea (North Eastern Africa) he was the first born to Salama (Shlomit) Tam and Yehia (Zachariah) Tam. Both from Jewish-Yemenite descent. The family moved to Israel in 1948. Avner graduated from high school at the early age of 15 at the top of his class. He became a certified Elementary School Teacher at the young age of 17 after graduating from "Givat Washington" College of Education in Central Israel. He proudly joined the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in 1962 for his mandatory three year service and was part of the elite "Sayeret Tzanhanim" (Paratrooper Brigade). Avner is one of the few soldiers to this day in the Israeli Military that has accomplished over 1,000 parachute jumps. In 1967 during the infamous "Six Day War" he was drafted as a reserve in one of the biggest accomplishments in military history. He was once again drafted in 1973 for the "Yom Kippur War" (The Day of Atonement War). In 1972 he purchased the 93 room "Queen of Sheba" Hotel in the southern resort city of Eilat. He remodeled the hotel in its entirety and added 40 oceanfront timeshare units which upgraded the hotel to a deluxe status, a first in Israel at the time. During that time Eilat had only three hotels. He sold the rights to the hotel in 1978 and moved to one of his favorite countries, Switzerland. In 2005 he created a patented multi-use Nasal Inhaler for Tobacco and Pharmaceutical uses. On Nov. 1, 1981, Avner married Suzanne Sickler in Palm Springs, California. Avner is survived by his loving family. Wife, Suzanne, two sons Shemron Eben, 25, Gilad Harry, 24, and daughter Shawntal Helah, 8, all residing in Miami, Florida. Avner is also survived by his mother- and father-in-laws, Harry and Dolores Sickler of Tyrone, PA. Sister-in- laws Linda Suda of Concord, NC, Colleen Mertiff, Deborah Heaton, of Tyrone and brother-in-law Timothy Sickler of Bellwood, PA. He is also survived by a daughter Bosmat, 40, sisters Mazal and Roza, brother Igal, all residing in Israel. And many nieces and nephews. Preceding Avner in death are his loving mother and father, and his beloved brother-in-law, Harry K. Sickler, III. Tyrone Daily Herald, Tyrone, Pa., February 14, 2008
