Tyrone lost a prominent citizen yesterday morning in the death of John F. Van Valzah, who died at his residence in that town at twenty- minutes past 4 o'clock. A severe cold, contracted some ten days ago, was the primary cause of his illness, and from it he was apparently recovering. Monday night, however, he was stricken with paralysis and from this disease never recovered. Mr. Van Valzah was aged 47 years and 4 months and was born at Milheim, Centre county, November 25, 1843. His parents have passed away and he leaves three brothers, who are: F. H. Van Valzah, of Spring Mills, Centre county; Dr. H. B. Van Valzah, of Clearfield, and Dr. Robert W. Van Valzah, of Terre Haute, Ind. In 1871 he went to Tyrone where he engaged in the mercantile business, becoming associated with John F. Wilson, under the firm name of Van Valzah & Wilson, and thus remained in business until his death. After the organization of the First National bank of Tyrone Mr. Van Valzah was chosen vice president and a member of the board of directors, positions which he filled in an admirable manner. He was one of the trustees of the Morrison library, a member of Tyrone lodge 494, Free and Accepted Masons, of Tyrone castle No. 79, Knights of the Golden Eagles, and of the Tyrone board of trade, being a member of the real estate committee of that board. In his death Tyrone has lost a good citizen, as he ever labored to advance its interest. The funeral services will be conducted by Rev. J. R. Davies of the Presbyterian church, at the residence of John F. Wilson, Tyrone, to-morrow morning at half-past 8 o'clock.
