Vaughan, night foreman in the middle division round house, died of a complications of diseases resulting from the grip, at 11:25 this morning, at her home, 1506 Seventh avenue. The deceased was born near Newry, March 24, 1829. She was married in Newry by Father Bradley 48 years ago today. They removed to this city in 1860 and have lived here ever since. She was the mother of nine children, seven of whom survive, as follows: Willard, Frank, William R., J. Harry, Claude, Mrs. Lillian Hendrick, all of this city and Sister Evangelist, a member of the Order of Charity, stationed at the academy at Greensburg. Mrs. Vaughn was an exemplary member of the Sacred Heart Church. She was a kind and devoted wife and mother and enjoyed the respect and esteem of all who knew her. Altoona Mirror, April 20th 1895 page 8 Note: Catharine's mother was Sarah Storm. Sarah was born July 26, 1806, the daughter of Joakim and Maria (Cassidy) Storm. She married James McCoy on October 17, 1844 when Catharine was 14 years old and died on May 31, 1863. Catharine's father is unknown. _____________________________________________________________________ J. FRANK VAUGHAN Aged 90, died at his home, 1506 Seventh Ave., last evening after a serious illness dating from June 14th. He was born in Newry, June 22, 1855, the son of William W. and Catherine (Storm) Vaughan. He was employed by the Pennsylvania railroad for forty -nine years, retiring thirty years ago as a painter. His wife Mrs. Nannie (Kerr) Vaughan preceded him in death. Surviving are three children: Norma, at home, Richard K., South Lakemont, and Sister Marie Evangelist, Seton Hill, Greensburg, one sister, Mrs. Lillian Hendricks, and two brothers, J. Harry and Claude E., all of Altoona. Friends will be received at the home after 7 pm today. Altoona Mirror, July 8, 1945 VAUGHAN - Funeral services for J. Altoona Mirror, July 11, 1945 _____________________________________________________________________ J. HARRY VAUGHAN Aged Retired Plumber Dies Unexpectedly J. Harry Vaughan, aged 81 of 1506 Seventh avenue, well known retired plumber, collapsed and died shortly after 11 o'clock this morning while walking past Eighth alley at Thirteenth street. Death resulted from a cerebral hemorrhage, Dr. Daniel M. Replogle, coroner, reported. The aged man was seen to fall by Rev. Donald C. Means of St. Luke's Episcopal church as he was leaving the parish house nearby. He went to Mr. Vaughan's assistance and then called city police. The Mercy hospital ambulance was summoned and removed the man to the institution. Examination there disclosed that he had died almost instantly and Coroner Replogle was summoned. He reported that in falling Mr. Vaughan suffered facial bruises. Members of the family said that he had enjoyed good health considering his advanced years. Mr. Vaughan was born in Altoona Nov. 6, 1868, a son of William W. and Catherine (Storm) Vaughan. He was a registered plumber and for many years conducted his own business establishment. Mr. Vaughan was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Surviving are one brother, Claude E. Vaughan of the city, and a number of nieces and nephews, among them Miss Norma and Victor McMullen, with whom he resided. Friends will be received at the N.A. Stevens mortuary after noon tomorrow. Altoona Mirror, October 14, 1949 _____________________________________________________________________ WILLIAM W. VAUGHAN Death Summons 90 year Old Veteran William W. Vaughn, Retired from Pennsy in 1900, Expires at home after a brief Illness William Waterson Vaughan one of the oldest retired employees of the Pennsy in Altoona and one of the oldest residents of this city, died at 11:25 o'clock last night at his home, 1506 Seventh Ave., of diseases incident to old age. He was aged 90 years. Mr. Vaughan was one of the best known residents of the city and is one of the few surviving veterans of the old Portage Canal. He had lived in retirement for seventeen years and enjoyed good health. His final illness was but twenty four hours duration. He was a native of Blair County and spent almost his entire life in the county. Being born at Newry, June 20th 1826, the son of James and Catherine Vaughan, he spent his early life at Newry, his first position being as a boatman on the old Portage canal, since abandoned, and operated between Hollidaysburg and Md. He followed the life of boatman for a number of years until his promotion to engineer in charge of the plane at the Head of Ten. From there he was transferred to Alliance, O. where he remained a short time, coming later to Altoona. He was night foreman at the Middle Division roundhouse of the Pennsy until his retirement July 1, 1900. Mr. Vaughan came to Altoona in 1863 and had resided here ever since. He was married in Newry in 1847 to Miss Catherine Storm, who died twenty two years ago in this city. Father Bradley performed the wedding ceremony. Mr. Vaughan was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a member of the St. Anthony's Society of the church. He is survived by the following children: T. Willard, J. Frank, J. Harry and Claude, all of this city, William of Allegheny, and Mrs. John Henricks , who made her home with her father. A brother, James, and a sister, Mrs. Rachel Allen, both of this city, also survive. The funeral will be held from his residence on Saturday morning, leaving the house at 9:45 o'clock. Requiem high mass will be said at the Sacred Heart church at 10 o'clock. Interment will be made in St. John's cemetery. The remains can be viewed after 7 o'clock Thursday evening.
