Vespa, 89, of State College, died Thursday, June 29, 2006 at the Mount Nittany Medical Centre. He was born on August 19, 1916 in South Fork to the late Dominic and Mary Schillero Vespa. On August 19,1940 he married Alice Porter. They were married 53 years until her death on January 19, 1994. He was a graduate of Tyrone High School. He received his Bachelors of Arts from Penn State in 1939 and later his Masters of Arts and Masters of Education. He completed all the course work for a Ph.D. in history. He began violin studies as a child and by the time he was in his teens he was performing as a soloist. He seriously considered a career as a concert violinist. He was a member of several symphony orchestras. In his college years he organized his own dance band. His love of music led him to open the Harmony Shop in the 1950s. This was the first full service music store in State College. He also taught at the State College High School. In 1965 he moved his family to Mansfield where he was a professor of history at Mansfield University until his retirement. He loved teaching and was a gifted teacher. In 1982 after his retirement he and his wife Alice returned to State College. He was a member of the Rotary Club and the Knights of Columbus and many other professional and civic organizations. He was one of the founders of the Schlow Memorial Library. He was a life-long Democrat, voting in every presidential election since the FDR administration to the present. He was a person of great generosity and intelligence, kind and loving to all, and touching the lives of many who knew him. He is survived by a daughter, Donna Vespa DuBois and her husband Garrett C. of Collegeville; a grandson, Matthew Vespa DuBois of Collegeville; a sister, Amelia Vespa Bubash of State College; two sisters-in-law, Irene Ishler Porter of State College, Adrianne Porter Petitgout and her husband George of Kentucky, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by an infant son. A memorial mass will held on Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church with the Monsignor David Lockard officiating. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105- 1942.
