Private Riley Alder Walker was slain in action on August 7, and is the most recent victim of the Hun war machine, in the list received last night. He was the son of Arley A. and Cora Walker, 309 Howard avenue, and was the only boy in the family. His mother received his last letter, under date of June 22, on August 5, two days before he met death. He wrote that he was within hearing distance of the front line big guns and that he was eager with the others in Company G to undergo the baptism of fire. He would have attained his 21st birthday on August 30. He enlisted on April 29, 1917, with Company G and went to Camp Hancock later for training. Prior to donning the brown uniform he was employed at the Pennsy plumbing shop. He frequently wrote home about his fear of never getting to France and the battlefield and was delighted when his command moved overseas. Private Walker's parents survive with these sisters: Mrs. Ruth Shoup, Marguerite, Katherine, Marie and Sue Walker, all at home. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian church and the P.R.R. Relief association. Altoona Tribune, Wednesday morning, August 14, 1918, pages 1, 10
