On Monday about 12 o'clock, as several men were working near Manning & Lewis' stone quarry, between Hollidaysburg and Frankstown, unloading an engine for the steam saw mill of Mountain & Wertz, from the cars, one of the men named Albert Wertz, a son of Mr. William Wertz, residing in the Loop, Frankstown township, was standing on the track, and one of the brakes of the cars on the track, above where they were working was unloosed and came down the track towards them, some of the men called to Wertz to get out of the way, but either failing to hear them or not knowing what they were saying, the car struck him, knocking him down, and passing over his left leg, cut it off to the thigh. He was taken to the residence of his uncle, Mr. Jacob Wertz, who lives near by, and Dr. McCready, of Frankstown, summoned, and Drs. Hay and Smith, of Hollidaysburg, immediately sent for. The doctor could do nothing for the young man and death relieved him of his sufferings about two hours after the accident occurred. The young man was about 23 years of age.
