WERTZ Veteran of the Civil War Passed Away Last Saturday Jacob B. Wertz, one of Tyrone's best known citizens, died at 1:45 o'clock Saturday afternoon, at his home, corner of Twelfth street and Woodland avenue. His demise resulted from a complication of diseases culminating in abscess of the stomach. His serious illness extended over two weeks. Jacob Bouslough Wertz was born at the Loop, in Frankstown township, November 14, 1841, and was aged at death 65 years and 24 days. He was a farmer and carried on his occupation on Piney creek, near Alexandria and at Schoenberger, removing from the latter place to Tyrone in the spring of 1890. During his residence here he was a teamster. On October 20, 1870, he was united in marriage to Sarah J. Wagner. His wife, who survives him, has long been an invalid, and the present bereavement comes with crushing force upon her. They have ten children to mourn the father's passing away: Roy L., of Turtle Creek; Harry C., of Pitcairn; Solomon G., Jacob, Mary, Dessa, Jannetta, Sarah and Pearl, all of Tyrone. His is also survived by three brothers, S.T. Wertz, of Charter Oak, Iowa; Phillip Wertz of Hollidaysburg; and Calvin Wertz, of Altoona; three sisters, Mrs. Margaret McCune, of Pittsburg; Mrs. Julia Hileman, of near Hollidaysburg; and Mrs. Gloria Loudon, of Sinking Valley; and three half-sisters, Mrs. Ida Tippery and Miss Lulu Wertz, of Altoona, and Mrs. Leonore Wagner, of Piney Creek. His step mother, Mrs. Lavinia Wertz, resides in Altoona. The deceased served his country faithfully in the Civil War as a soldier in the Thirteenth Pennsylvania Cavalry, being in the service from August, 1863, until the war's close. He was an exceptionally fine horseman. Mr. Wertz took great interest in Grand Army affairs and was a member of Col. D. M. Jones Post 172, of Tyrone. He was a good Christian, holding membership in the Lutheran communion since he was sixteen years of age. He was a member of the First church of Tyrone. Devoted as husband and father, honest in all his relations with his fellow-man, genial, energetic and public-spirited, Mr. Wertz will be generally and regretfully missed from this community. He was a particularly patient sufferer, enduring the great pain of his last illness with wonderful fortitude. The funeral will take place at 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the late home of the deceased, Rev. F. L. Bergastresser conducting the service. Interment in Tyrone cemetery. The home has recently been quarantined owing to the illness of a grand child who has just recovered from diphtheria. The quarantine will be lifted tonight, and there will be no restrictions upon the family and relationship in attendance at the funeral, thought services are not expected to be entirely public in character.
