Wertzberger, well known as a former hotel proprietor of the city, died at his home on the Buckhorn road, two miles from the city, at 8.15 o'clock yesterday morning. Death was due to heart trouble, from which Mr. Wertzberger had been suffering for several years. Joseph Philip Wertzerger was born at Bloomfield Furnace, Bedford county, June 21, 1849, the son of Stephen and Mary Wertzberger, deceased. He spent his early years on the farm, coming to Altoona at the age of 17, and learning the carpenter trade under John Geesey. Three years later he entered the service of the Pennsy company under Foreman Andrew Kipple. He left Altoona in 1876 and located in Colorado, where he engaged in the bridge building business. In 1883 Mr. Wertzberger returned to Altoona, and after working several years for the Pennsy company became proprietor of the McCabe House, on Ninth avenue, between Twelfth and Thirteenth streets. Two years later he took over the Merchants' hotel on Tenth avenue and conducted the hostelry until ten years ago when he retired from business. On his return from the west in 1883, he married Mrs. Barbara Burgoon, widow of the late Albert Burgoon, former proprietor of the Franklin house. He is survived by his wife and the following sons: Harry S. Wertzberger, of Sharon Hill, Pa.; Joseph L. and Charles S., both of Altoona, and W. H. Burgoon and John T. Burgoon, also of this city. One brother, John Wertzberger, of Altoona and the following sisters also survive: Mrs. Joseph Franks, Mrs. Rose Foster, both of this city, and Mrs. Mary McParland, of Philadelphia. Mr. Wertzberger was a member of St. Mary's German Catholic church, of Altoona lodge No. 102, B.P.O.E. and the Altoona Rod and Gun club. The funeral will be held with solemn requiem mass at St. Mary's church, at 9 o'clock Saturday morning, followed by interment in St. Mary's cemetery.
