All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/blair/ _________________________________________ James Leroy Weyer Mr. James Leroy Weyer, age 89, of 1414 Burley Avenue, Tyrone, died Tuesday, December 11, 2007 at 4:25 p.m. at his home. He was born September 14, 1918 in Tyrone, the son of Harry and Clara Banks Weyer and on April 14, 1944 at Phoenix City, Alabama, he was married to Phyllis Hicks who survives. Also surviving are two daughters - Judy Gearhart (Jim), Bellefonte and Joyce Smith (Rick), Osceola Mills; seven grandchildren - Jeffrey Gearhart (Denise), Selinsgrove; Adam Gearhart (Erin), Bellefonte; Andrew Gearhart, Las Vegas, NV; Richard Smith Jr. (Suzanne), West Newton, PA; Bruce Smith (Vernel), State College; Gary Smith (Companion Jessica), Spring Mills and Jennifer Benn (Don), Falls Creek, PA and nine great grandchildren - Kevin, Abby, and Katie Gearhart, Josh, Emily, Nicholas, Evan, and Dustin Smith and Allison Benn. He was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters - George, John, Harold, Glenn, Bruce, Freda Hartman, Genevieve Beamer, and Ivalou Weyer. Also preceding was one granddaughter, Tricia Eileen Smith. Mr. Weyer was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Tyrone, AARP, Anderson Denny Post VFW, and a life member of Howard Gardner American Legion Post. He retired in 1984 as head operator at Westvaco after 38 years of service. He served with the United States Army in the Sixth Armored Division in the European Theatre during World War II and was the recipient of the Purple Heart and the Silver Star. He received the Silver Star for gallantry in action at Eltmansee, Germany on April 3, 1945, when he voluntarily moved forward under enemy fire to reconnoiter for gun positions. His accurate shooting covered the reconnaissance and was responsible for knocking out a machine gun nest and numerous vehicles. Funeral service for James L. Weyer will be held Saturday, December 15, 2007 at 2:30 p.m. at the Richard H. Searer Funeral Home Inc. with Pastor Tracie Bullis officiating. Interment with flag presentation will follow in Blair Memorial Park.
