Allan Woodle Dead. The Rev. Allan Sheldon Woodle, pastor emeritus of St. Luke’s Protestant Episcopal church, Altoona, died at his home in Narberth, Pa., Thursday afternoon, in his seventieth year. He was born at Janesville, Rock county, Wis., July 22, 1845,son of Major Isaac and Cornella (Sheldon) Woodle, and in 1876 was elected rector of St. Luke’s church, Altoona, where he served faithfully and efficiently until 1906 when he was made rector emeritus, being succeeded by the Rev. H. J. Glover, who served for one year, until February 8, 1908, when the present rector, Rev. George r. Bishop, came to the city. Rev. Woodle was reared at Janesville, Wis., and received his education in the High school at that place and Sinsinawa and Racine colleges. Leaving college he spent five years in the study of theology at Nashotah Theological seminary, from which institution he was graduated in 1873 with the degree of Bachelor of Divinity. After graduation he served at Milwaukee under Bishop Armitage, and his first charge was at St. Matthias Protestant Episcopal church, Waukesha, Wis., where he served for two years. At the end of that time he was called to New York as assistant minister at Christ’s church at Fifth avenue and Thirty- fifth street and as manage of the “Church Journal.” When Rev. Mr. Woodle came to Altoona his pastoral duties were very arduous, but throwing himself energetically into the work he won success under his administration a large stone church was erected to take the place of the small one which had been built in 1858. The membership, which had been small was more than trebled. On September 12, 1876, Rev. Woodle was united in marriage with Abbie C. Tisdale, of Newport, R. I., and to the union five children were born, all of who survive. His wife preceded him to the grave. The surviving children are : Allen S., Jr., of the Baldwin Locomotive works, Philadelphia; Mary K., wife of George Adams, a professor of Leland Stanford university, Oakland, Cal.; Bernon T., with Day and Zimmerman, of Philadelphia; Corneia S., at home, and Margaret C., wife of George Ware, of Downey, Idaho. Rev. Mr. Woodle was a fine looking man pleasant and courteous, yet so a dignified as to command respect of all who came in contact with him. He was a logical reasoner, a clear thinker and an interesting speaker. His sermons represented his own heartfelt convictions as to truth and duty, and in his preaching he always had careful regard to the order and proportion of Christian truth and to the wants of his people. He gave to his church, a thorough, conscientious and faithful ministry which was fruitful of much good. In his charitable efforts in Altoona, few living today realize the extent of his work. Many citizens owed their positions in life to him and some who occupy excellent positions today owe their first start to the kindly interest of Rev. Mr. Woodle.
