Again I am called upon to do homage to a dear friend and brother, Calvin H. Woomer. It was on the 1st day of August, 1885, our bosom friend, Brother Lloyd P. Woomer, assistant superintendent of Olivia M. E. Sunday school, departed from earth to glory, only to be followed in a few months by his dear sister, Carrie, who was the chorist of our school, and only a few hours before her death, her cousin, Miss Clara, had been summoned by the angel of Jehovah. Thus in a few months death had done its work, and again this Thursday morning as the heavens look dark - the sun in all its glory is hidden from view by dark clouds, the news goes out, Cal. Woomer is dead. Calvin Woomer's death was sudden to all, yet not unexpected. He had for some time complained of feeling unwell and would at time be unable to leave his home. On Thursday, evening. Feb. 17th, your correspondent, walked with him from the station. He was then complaining. I bade him good-night and he went to his home. On the way he had a hemorrhage. Dr. Crawford was quickly summoned, who gave him medical attention until he died. On the 1st of March Dr. Smith, of Tyrone, was called and these two physicians did all in their power to alleviate his sufferings, but alas, the invisible hand of God refused to turn back the dial of time. The winged messenger of Jehovah appeared with a message of joy to his waiting soul, bidding him come and rest in Abraham's bosom. While the message was one of sorrow and grief to the family it was peace to him. Though his suffering was of short duration, at times he was in great agony; yet he bore up patiently. He put his trust in God and to Him was not afraid to go in death. A few hours before he died he said, "Lloyd has gone over the river and I am going to follow." Calling his parents, brothers and sisters around his bedside, he kissed them all good-bye and three times repeated the Lord's prayer. He was ready to die, and expressed a willingness to be with God and the angels. His dying words were "Pray, pray; amen, amen." Deceased became a member of the M. E. Church in November, 1885; was received on probation by Rev. C. A. Biddle, and in May last was received into full membership by Rev. W. M. Memminger on recommendation of his class leader, Joseph Woomer. He was a consistent Christian. He was made assistant superintendent of the Sabbath school in May last, which office he filled with credit and ability until disease mastered him. He was always regularly found in class meeting and prayer meeting. He led the prayer meeting for the last time on Sunday evening, Feb. 13. Addressing the congregation he plead with them to seek the Lord. He was but 27 years of age and his death is the first in the circle of eight children. Thus within two years four of the most active young pillars of the Sunday school and shining lights of Methodist have gone through the gates ajar. The funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. Wm. Brill, deceased's pastor, on Friday, March 4th. The sermon was very affecting throughout, melting the congregation to tears. Brother Brill chose for his lesson the latter part of the 15th chapter of 1st Corinthians, beginning at the 35th verse. After the last look --- the friends the mortal remains of Calvin Woomer were tenderly laid to rest in Olivia cemetery. To the parents, brothers and sisters go out the sympathy of all. Blessed are they who die in the Lord. Brother Woomer was a member in good standing of Sinking Spring Lodge, No. 127, K. of P., Tyrone, which order buried him according to the rites at the close of the pastor's ceremonies at the grave. Deceased was born at Olivia, Dec. 2d, 1859; died March 2, 1887. His death was caused by acute encephalitis. W. E. HAMER. Olivia, March 4, 1887.
