Mr. Henry Woomer was called to his heavenly rest on Wednesday evening at 6:30. While his death came very unexpectedly it found him ready. He was a son of William Woomer who settled on the farm now occupied by Jonathan Woomer in the neighborhood of one hundred years ago and at this place Henry was born 83 years ago. The death of this aged citizen closed this generation of his family. He was a collier and was known as the best in this section of the State. He was in the employ of the Bald Eagle Furnace Company during its operations in Bald Eagle. He was a staunch Democrat until the Know-Nothing party was organized when he went over to the Whig party, occasionally splitting his ticket. Voting for Abraham Lincoln he as ever since been a staunch Republican, voting a solid ticket and was an earnest worker for the party for years. He was tax collector and supervisor of Snyder township, being repeatedly elected against all opposition until nine years ago he retired to private life. He was the oldest of the settlers in Bald Eagle and lived in what is known as the Woomer Settlement. He has been a consistent member of the M. E. church for upwards of 50 years and through his efforts the church was built at Bald Eagle. He was trustee, class leader and steward. The preachers always found a hearty welcome at his home. He loved to quote the scriptures and had a store house of knowledge of the same as he used to say. "Weeping may endure for a night but joy cometh in the morning; in the morning of the resurrection in the Christian's home in glory, there remains a rest for me." His remains were followed to the tomb by a large concourse of sorrowing friends Friday, January 10, 1890. Rev. C. W. Rishell had charge of the services. Rev. William Brill of Birmingham (formerly his pastor) delivered the sermon, selecting for his text Isaiah 8th chapter, 10th verse, "Say ye to the righteous that it shall be well with him for they shall eat the fruit of their doings." The sermon was very impressively delivered and the impression made suggested the truth of the text to the living. The house was filled with sorrow and gloom and weeping friends, the Rev. gentleman made several references to his life that were remembered by many present. Thus ends the chapter and life of his generation. Henry Woomer was born May 7, 1807, died January 8, 1890, aged 82 years 8 months and 1 day. He was married at the age of 26 years to Miss Catharine Garland, November 21, 1833. This life together was 48 years. To this union were born nine children, four boys and five girls: William, Andrew, David and Theodore, Mrs. Elizabeth Woomer, Mrs. Sarah Copenhaver, Mrs. Margaret Lewis, Miss Jane and Marietta. To this union have been born 37 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; his children all survive him but William who died quite young and Andrew who was killed in the battle of Antietam May 17, 1863.
