Yon, one of Altoona's best known retired business men and a veteran of the Civil war, died at his home, 1417 Eighteenth street, Monday evening at 8.20 o'clock, death being directly due to bronchial pneumonia, following a complication of diseases. Mr. Yon had been in good health all his life until a few months ago when he began to fail, and was bedfast for five weeks. Mr. Yon had resided in this city for sixty-five years coming here from the farm which was his birthplace and early home at Yellow Springs in Catherine township. He was born at the Yellow Springs farm on Jan. 23, 1840, the son of William and Mary (Sherfey) Yon, and like most farmers' sons received his early education in the common schools of the township. He came to this city in 1858 at the age of 18 years and entered the employ of the Pennsy in which service he remained until 1883 with the exception of a year spent with the Union army from 1864-65. His service in the sectional strife was given as a member of the 188th Ohio infantry from which he was mustered out at Columbus, O. He returned to this city and reentered the service of the Pennsy where he remained until 1883 when he embarked in business. His first enterprise was as a grocery and dry goods merchant which line he later gave up to enter the firm of T. E. Moffit and Co., engaged in the marble business. He retired from active participation in the mercantile world in 1902 and had since lived retired at his home. In 1879, Mr. Yon was married to Mary Riling, the daughter of Levi Riling of Logan township, who survives him together with the three children born to the happy union, Scott J. of Ashland, Ky., Mrs. Fannie M. Harrison of Louisville, Ky., and Miss Clara R., at home. In business life Mr. Yon was noted for his adherence to the principles of right and square dealing rather than for his shrewdness and his word was always taken at par. In his family life and church activities, around both of which his interests centered he earned the title, which means much more than those of royalty of a "good man." A member of the First Lutheran church for forty-three years he was one of its most active members and served for two terms as elder and for one term as president of the church council. He was also a member of the Mountain City lodge No. 837 of the I.O.O.F., and of the Logan lodge 79 of the K. of P. The funeral services will be conducted at the church at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon with interment to follow in the Carson Valley cemetery.
